Recycling Information
Recycling Goes Single Stream! Now you can mix all of your recycling together. No more sorting of plastics, glass, aluminum, paper and cardboard. Put them all together in one container and we'll do the rest!
Residents also have more options for what types of containers to use for the recyclables. Here are your three options for the new single-stream recycling program:
Unacceptable Items
The following is a list of all items that cannot be placed in your recycling container:
Detailed Recycling Information
Glass
Glass items include all glass food and beverage jars and bottles. Remove metal lids and place separately in bin.
Plastics
Plastic items include plastic containers labeled #1 - #7 only.
Cans
Acceptable cans include all metal food and beverage cans made of aluminum, tin, steel and bi-metal, such as soda and tuna cans.
Aseptics
The term aseptics refers to milk cartons, juice boxes and juice bags.
Plastic Bags
Recycle grocery, produce, dry cleaning, shopping, newspaper and bread bags. Please bundle all bags together inside a tied plastic bag (preferably a clear bag or labeled as recycling).
Greener Option: Rather than using plastic grocery bags, bring your own canvas or reusable tote bags when you go shopping!
Mixed Paper
Greener Option: Reduce the amount of
paper waste at your home with a Junk
Mail Kit. For more information, visit
www.stopjunkmail.org.
Corrugated Cardboard
If cardboard cannot fit in your recycling container, flatten and place it alongside your container. Cardboard pieces should be no larger than 3 feet by 3 feet. Please tie large quantities of cardboard with string for ease of handling.
Polystyrene
Includes Styrofoam packing blocks, egg cartons and "take-out" containers (emptied and rinsed). Place large foam blocks in a secured, clear plastic bag, and place next to recycling bins.
Scrap Metal
Include clean aluminum foil and pie pans, metal lids from glass bottles and jars, metal pots and pans, and aerosol cans (emptied of gas and liquid).
Household Batteries And Fluorescent Tubes
To recycle household batteries and bulbs contact the Countywide Household Hazardous Waste Program at (408) 299-7300 for information.
Used Motor Oil
Place used motor oil in one-gallon plastic containers with tight fitting, screw top lids. (Milk and water jugs with pop-on lids are acceptable.) Lids must be taped securely! You may place up to two one-gallon containers next to your recycling bin for pickup.
Used Oil Filters
Place fully drained filters in a sealed, leak-proof, plastic bag and place curbside next to your recycling bins.
Residents also have more options for what types of containers to use for the recyclables. Here are your three options for the new single-stream recycling program:
|
Option 1 Use existing recycling containers, commingling the recyclables. |
|
|
Option 2 Utilize 32-gallon can(s) labeled with "COMMINGLED RECYCLABLES" sticker (stickers will be available at Los Altos Hills Town Hall or by calling LAGCo). Weight of 32-gallon can not exceed 60 pounds. |
|
|
Option 3 - Most Prefered Option Rent or purchase a 96-gallon rolling cart from LAGCo for the recyclables. These carts are the most convenient way to collect your commingled recyclables. Rolling carts will be available in the Spring of 2006 on a first-come, first-serve basis. To reserve yours, please call Los Altos Garbage Company at (650) 961-8040. |
